Founded by Chandler F. Cox, Jr. and Dominick Giovannelli with a group of local Birmingham, Alabama investors in 1989, American Mining Insurance Company (now Berkley Industrial Comp) began as a specialty carrier offering workers' compensation coverage specifically to the coal mining industry. At its beginning, the organization only operated in three states: Alabama, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania.
W.R. Berkley, an insurance holding company that is among the largest commercial line writers in the United States, acquired American Mining Insurance Company. Through that partnership and the continued dedication of the team, we are able to access the resources and strength generally possessed only by a large corporation while providing the focus, expertise and personal service of a smaller specialty organization.
American Mining Insurance Company expanded our workers' compensation appetite to include class codes outside of the mining and mining-related fields. These risks are similar to the mining risks in that they are highly regulated industries with highly skilled workers who are highly paid. By solely focusing on workers' compensation, the organization's experience set us apart as an experts in the field.
For 30 years, American Mining Insurance Company remained true to the commitment to provide experience, excellence and empathy. In April 2019, on the company's 30th anniversary, the organization became what you know it as today, Berkley Industrial Comp. While our name changed, the priority did not. We continue to strive to get injured workers back to a healthy, productive life both at work and home.
